Exercise modification is one of the foundations of personal training. People use personal trainers for a variety of reasons, but one of the key benefits is the trainer’s ability to customize movement patterns to match the client’s fitness level.

It is a skill, to be sure, but it’s also an artform that ensures every workout will be unique. If you know some of the common modifications trainers employ, you could begin to apply them to your own workout plan. Start by respecting your limits.

All too often, new exercisers attempt exercises that are way too difficult for their fitness level. They see others performing awesome-looking exercises and, naturally, they believe they must also do those movements to achieve their goals. This notion is not only dangerous, it’s also counterproductive to a beginner’s progress.
